Beautiful Minnesota

(beware -- lots of photos on this page!)

I have one thing to say.

Minnesota has beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Simply. Beautiful.

I realize that often I don't have many positive things to say about the state where I live. I hate the governor. It's too cold. The people here for the most part are not all that nice. And the Twin Cities seems to think it's way more cosmopolitan than it really is.

But, man. They've got themselves some beautiful skies.

I don't know what it is. But Wisconsin mornings and evenings were never so consistently beautiful. And for a while here, I would just think, we'll this is a beautiful evening. Well, today is a beautiful day..

Then it occurred to me that this thought crosses my mind practically every morning. And every night.

These revelations and visions of grandeur usually start in the morning. While I'm getting ready for the work. The sun is rising and will peak into my bathroom mirror. Reflection of the window in our office. And most days, after being summoned by the sun, I'll actually take a moment to stand in front of the window. To reflect. Enjoy the color. Prepare for the day.

Because it is the color. That I find so astounding. Gorgeous. Breathtaking. There are pinks and purples here that stun and glow. Cameron Crowe could have damn well shot the final scene for Vanilla Sky here. Because that's what we get. Vanilla Skies.

And I just had to share. Because I'm lucky enough to view them. Almost every day.

Heh. And this morning I tried to take a few pics. Just to give you a hint of what I'm talking about. Only it was a little too early. And the reflection off my windows kind of screwed up the shots. But I'll show them to you anyway:

View from my living room. 6:30 am this morning.

View from my bedroom. Same time.

Another view from my living room. And really, my fig tree doesn't look nearly that sick in real life...

Okay. Since I had the digital camera out and I am still so proud of my new office, I thought I'd show it off.

Oh, and did I mention that I got my work PC networked as well? Yes, I'm working at home via my cable modem. Hee. I may never go into work again.

But I digress. And here is my grand room:

This is my desk. I have all the computers side by side just to show off. But really, the laptop on the far left is usually in the living room (that's our Powerbook with wireless internet -- and you can even see our airport sneaking there in below to the far right). And I know. I have to move our mail slot now. It used to be over the desk (where the desk once way). Now it's just annoying over the bed like that.

Close-up of my desk. Probably more information than you really needed. Can you say this girl is Networked? Can you say this girl is a geek?

This is my view from the desk. If I turn around. See, Sienna likes her new access to the window (and her mom!). And that's James' mountain bike hanging up. His road bike is usually below it -- but it's at the shop today. Oh, and that's fresh rosemary -- in case you were interested.

This is a close-up of my office window view. It looks out over the Mississippi and west Saint Paul. From this view, we're the tallest building. But, trust me, big Saint Paul buildings can be seen from the other end of our building. Side note: it's always fun when the building across the street is having service done on the roof. I can't tell you how many times I've been undressing and I look out the window and go, "Shit! Men!"

Heh. Sienna moved. She loves being by her mommy. (And she's such a lady with those crossed paws and all.)

Behind me is my bookcase I got from Target. And my mountain bike. We're going to hang that (the bike) on the wall above the desk (we have REALLY tall ceilings) to get it out of the way.

And here's the view from the hall. I'm just so proud. This room is a million times more open and roomy than it was two weeks ago. Hi Sienna!

Can you tell I'm pleased with myself?

Currently reading:
The Optimist's Daughter, Eudora Welty
Book club selection. I haven't read much but this did win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction one year.

Just Finished:
Jemima J, Jane Green
Pretty Cute. Not very realistic -- but a romantic, entertaining and fast read.

4 Blondes, Candice Bushnell
Dec. Book Club Selection by the author of Sex in the City. I wasn't crazy about it at all. Oh.. the problems of the rich and famous.

Black Hawk Down, Mark Bowden
This was a very eye-opening account of what took place in Somalia in 1993. I can believe I was so ignorant to it when it happened.
