Friday Five

1. What's the most romantic thing you've ever done for someone else?
Oh. This is hard. I'd like to think that I'm romantic and now I'm drawing a blank. There was that time I had all my campers (when I was a camp counselor) send letters to James. But I recently told you kids all about that. And I've never answered the door wrapped in Syran Wrap or cleaned house naked. How about buying James a Bobofett Christmas ornament and letting him hang in on the tree? -- God! I'm so pathetic.

2. [pardon the cosmo question] What are your erogenous zones?
Neck. Back of my arms. And sometimes the palms of my hands if they're caressed just right. (Man. This is some personal stuff -- or I'm really a prude!)

3. How old were you the first time you had sex?
18. And it was with James. How sweet. Although I think we did it to the soundtrack of Les Miserable. Back in my "I love musicals"-geek days.

4. What's the most unusual place you've ever had sex?
Oh! I have a good one! And I don't even mind posting it on the Internet! It was in one of those coin-operated porn booths in Montreal. Very scandalous. But it was with James and we were sharing a hotel room with a gaggle of friends so we found whatever privacy we could get. Bet you don't think I'm such a prude NOW!

5. Do you have plans for Valentine's Day or is it just another Thursday?
Dinner at this cute little Italian place a block away. I used to abstain from the holiday, but now it's just a good excuse to have a decent meal out and indulge in some perfume that I'm almost running short of.

I think my cable/dsl router from Amazon will arrive tonight. So that's what I'll probably spend my weekend doing. Networking the flat. It's supposed to snow tomorrow. A fair amount. 6 or so inches. And I'm looking forward to a weekend with no plans. Although I did run into our friends in the elevator this morning and they invited us out for Folk music on Saturday. I'm so bad at turning people down. I like to be fun. But I also like my downtime and seeing as next weekend we have both our Cooking Light Supper club, I'm hosting Book Club and I have a 3-hour hair appointment planned, I know it's going to go fast.

Anyway. My busy, yuppie, childless life. Care much?

I do hope it snows, though. Not that I've a big fan of the cold. I'm not. But this brown, icky mud stuff is annoying. And last night I was supposed to take a Cross Country Ski class with a friend. Only they had to cancel it because of lack of snow. In Minnesota. How whacked is that? I guess their rescheduling the class, though. And my friend still invited me to attend (he originally planned for his wife to go -- but she has another class that night). I think I'd really like to learn how to Cross Country Ski. I need a winter sport. I've been drooling over a pair of snow shoes. But again, the lack of snow here isn't helping. And I'm too much of a wimp to run in the cold. Just not my scene. Not when I can be kickboxing, spinning and yoga posing at the gym.

But it is February. Which means that only a couple months of winter are left. And the mildness of the season has made it go really fast. I've barely had to deal with any driving in the snow. There has been a significant lack in snow days, my friends. And before you know it, James has his first race at the end of next month. I also got a mailing for the Minnesota Iron Man Bike ride yesterday -- the ride we did the 68-miler in last year. It's the last weekend in April. Less than three months from now.

Before you know it, I'm going to be needing to replace my cheapo Target sandals that I practically destroyed last year.

And I want to get in shape. For mountain biking. For running a possible half marathon. And, for, (get this) possibly road riding. Yes, you heard me say it. Road riding. Road cycling. It may not be a big surprise to you folks, but it would be to Mr. James. He's been wanting me to get a road bike for years. But I've hedged because a road bike is SO expensive and I've doubted I'd like the sport anyway. I also (admittedly) have some serious self-esteem problems in the cycling arena. And not having a road bike is a good excuse for turning down those women's rides that the women affiliated with James' cycling team go on.

But the thought has been creeping in. Maybe I would like it. And I even offered to build the team's website for a discount on a frame. There are also bike swap meets where you can get good bikes for cheap. Still, it's not a small undertaking. Road bikes cost so much. To buy. To maintain. I need some decent shoes.

But I'd like to ride. I'd like to surprise myself. And I'd like to go faster. Doing on the 68-mile route for the Iron Man last year was fun, but it was slow. On our mountain bikes. With a faster, lighter bike, I could zip. And maybe I'd be good. Because deep down I do think I'm strong. I do think I could keep up.

So, we'll see.

Currently reading:
The Optimist's Daughter, Eudora Welty
Book club selection. I haven't read much but this did win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction one year.

Just Finished:
Jemima J, Jane Green
Pretty Cute. Not very realistic -- but a romantic, entertaining and fast read.

4 Blondes, Candice Bushnell
Dec. Book Club Selection by the author of Sex in the City. I wasn't crazy about it at all. Oh.. the problems of the rich and famous.

Black Hawk Down, Mark Bowden
This was a very eye-opening account of what took place in Somalia in 1993. I can believe I was so ignorant to it when it happened.
