Pure Exhaustion

I am exhausted.
Exhausted, I tell you.
And that's really not what weekends are supposed to do to you. Not when you have a full week ahead. Lots of work. An actual deadline. Work. Tired. Not such a good combination.
But it was fun. And the exhaustion part was not on purpose. It just sort of happened that way. And now it's almost four o'clock on Monday, I'm fighting to keep my eyes open. And I'm thinking that since I gave blood today, I can guiltlessly forgo my evening workout.
But the weekend. Right. Fun.
I guess it all started Friday night. James and I were still both quite tired from the holidays and then the shock of going back to work. So, we really didn't feel up to anything. Actually, we turned down some plans including a concert and dancing. Instead we rented a movie. A DVD to be specific. Yes, little Heather got herself a spiffy new machine. Which I could write a whole 'nother entry about. But for now I'll just say, love it, love it, love it.
So, we rented the DVD. Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Which was just incredible. The music was awesome. And when it finished at 10pm, we were going to get off to bed. But then those damn "Extra features" got us on the disc and I was up until about midnight watching deleted scenes and the "story behind."
So, bed early on Friday?
Not so much.
Of course, I got up early on Saturday because, you know, I belong to the gym now and I was dying to take a step class. And tough is the only word I can think of to describe it. Good. But tough. It's really been a while. After class I was famished, ate some pasta and then James and I went to the coffee shop around the corner to just hang and read. Besides, I needed to finish my 4 Blondes book for Book Club the following evening.
After we got home, we were all about taking the tree down. Ornaments. Decorations. It all went bye-bye. And my poor tree. It was so dead. Needles dropping everywhere. And let me tell you, dragging a tree like this down two hallways and six floors in an elevator is no small feat if you don't want to drop needles everywhere. But we did well.
Of course, then it was time to get going. A friend of ours was having a dinner party and we went over to their place for pasta and board games. It was quite an excellent time. There were 6 of us, all couples. And we ate so many vegetables (it's the little things) and drank SO MUCH wine. We probably didn't need the drunken Tiramisu I brought for dessert.
And then somewhere along in the evening (probably in the middle of the movie trivia game we were playing), Angela and Kevin (couple #1) mentioned the dog show at the Xcel Center. And James and I were, like, we want to go to that, too! So we decided to go together. And then Jennifer and Kevin (couple #2) were, like, what? what's that? And there we were, 4 bottles of wine gone, all deciding to get up the next morning to meet at 9:30am for a dog show.
Which happened. Actually. At 9:30 in the morning. Everyone was there. And we walked the 8 blocks to the Xcel center and spent the morning and afternoon both adoring animals and making fun of some of the dog people which literally did look like they walked off the set of Best in Show. The best part was probably the agility. There were two tracks going on at once and both had just one dog after the other running. The funniest was the Samoyed who got out there, did one obstacle and then turned around and left the ring. Actually walked right out into the crowd. It was so funny. I'm think the dog was disqualified. Just a little bit.
At about 1:30, most of us were starving. Between the alcohol the night before, the lack of sleep and lack of food, we hit a bar nearby for lunch. Which had $3 bloody marys. So. Yes. We drank some, too.
Unfortunately, when we left at 3pm, most of us were exhausted and Jen and I still had book club to go. Which started in two hours. And I was in charge of food. Of course, the usual wine that goes with book club was less than attracting. I just wanted some water and some sleep. But I stopped by Whole Foods, picked up some yummy snacks. And the night was quite pleasant. Although, I did stick to the tea and water.
We all pretty much hated 4 Blondes. Everyone was expecting something more "Sex and the City"-ish. And this book was just plain annoying. Most of the evening was spent discussing other books, movies and travel.
At about 8, Jen and I finally took off. I didn't get home until 9pm. And I was EXHAUSTED. I could barely concentrate on the book I was reading. And when I got up this morning, my face was swollen and white.
You'd never know how charming my weekend really was. Only now I'm wondering when I can get some sleep.
