Quad Cramps

Last night, like I promised, I made it to the gym to weight train. I'm actually very happy that my apartment complex has such a nice free weight area in the fitness room. I didn't even have to leave my building to get a great workout. And that counted for something yesterday. Snow storm in Minnesota. I suppose I shouldn't whine considering where I live. But, even here, when six inches of snow falls to the ground, I don't want to have to go anywhere.

I weight trained for about an hour focusing mainly on upper body since cardiokickboxing seems to do such a good job in the whole quad/glut area (you know, all the squats and kicks and shit). I did do some weighted lunges and a really bizarre thing happened. I did two sets of 15 lunges on each leg holding two 10-lb. dumbbells. This went rather well. My legs seemed slightly fatigued when I finished the sets, but nothing major. But then when I started to walk over to the weights to start some arm work, my quads totally cramped up. And I mean, CRAMPED UP. I've never felt anything like it. I was standing there massaging my legs praying the pain wouldn't increase to the point that would feel like those horrible leg cramps I sometimes get in the middle of the night. The cramps subsided. Then a couple more times reappeared when I'd "bend" to pick up some weights or sit on the bench. I finally stretched them out at length and everything seemed fine. My quads didn't ache or anything. They didn't even feel that fatigued. It was really odd.

What is odder is that because of that I really thought I'd be incredibly sore when I got up this morning, but I'm not. I can feel that I weight trained, but nothing debilitating or too painful. I really wish I understood better what happened? Better yet, I wonder if there was anything I was doing wrong with my lunges? I made sure my knees didn't go over my ankles. I checked my form in the mirror. I practiced controlled movements.

It's a mystery.

Tonight my original plan was to go to Studio Cycling at the gym at 5:30. Lifetime, the club I joined, doesn't have my beloved Spinning program and I'm having to adapt to this class which really isn't the same at all except that it's taught on a bike. But I'm trying because, honestly, I don't have a choice. However, I'm starting to reconsider class tonight because more snow is supposed to fall this evening and staying in my building for some light cardio sounds a little more practical. Regardless of which I choose, I want to fill my evening in with some sort of cardio so that I keep back up with my workout schedule. Gone are the weeks of a few workouts here and there. I'm coming back to my cardio 3-4x/week, strength 2x & stretch 2x.
